How Does It Work?

Kenya

Our Cypress essential oil is a blend of two species of Cypress: Cupresses sempervirens and Cupresses lusitanica. Including multiple species of Cypress not only solidifies a sustainable source but also improves and amplifies the qualities and benefits of the oil.

Many farmers plant cypress as a fence, wind break, or shade, with the eventual purpose to sell for timber, but it can take from 20 to 30 years before the timber is mature enough to sell. In the meantime, the lower branches must be cut off to ensure that the tree grows straight enough for timber. The essential oil comes from distilling these lower branches. Interestingly, the oil is not in the wood, but in the leaves of the tree.

A Benefit for All

The cypress is an evergreen tree that typically grows from 40 to 60 feet (12-15 m) high. In Kenya, they are grown in the Mt. Kenya region because the climate conditions are favourable to the tree. Cypress was introduced in Kenya hundreds of years ago as a forestry crop, meant to aid in reforestation efforts. Because cypress grows well in the climate, the government encourages planting. In fact, the government “rents” land to farmers in the Mt. Kenya area for free while cypress trees are growing. The farmers benefit from the free use of the land and the shade from the cypress trees.

Added Revenue in Kenya

doTERRA sources Cypress essential oil from the lower branches of the cypress tree that must be removed by farmers in order to keep the tree straight enough for timber. Here is how this has minimised waste and improved the lives of farmers in Kenya:

  • Normally, farmers would have to wait at least 20 years before seeing any revenue from a cypress tree
  • Farmers now receive an additional revenue stream for the crop they are already growing
